  • e-Literate to be Down for Scheduled Maintenance

    I’m going to be upgrading my blogging software this weekend. This will mean losing some of the customizations to the site that I really like (but that probably nobody else noticed), but it also means that I’ll be able to stay current with WordPress releases in the future. In the process, I’ll be changing the look and feel substantially. Again, I have mixed feelings about this, but on balance I think it is for the best.

    At any rate, don’t be surprised if the blog looks mangled or even is down altogether for a while over the weekend. I’ll post again to let you know when it’s done.

  • At EUNIS and Sakai the Next Two Weeks

    I’ll be at the EUNIS conference this coming week (arriving Monday morning on the red eye) and the Sakai conference the next week (arriving in Paris on the night of Friday, 6/27 and leaving on Friday, 7/4). Feel free to track me down if you’re at either event and want to chat.

    If you do track me down and we have met before, you should know that I’m really bad at remembering names and faces. There’s a good chance that I will remember our prior conversation once reminded of it. I just may not remember its sensory connections to the physical world.  It’s  the way my brain works. (Which is why I tend to walk–and drive–into things.) Please don’t be offended if I need a little help making the connection. It doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy our last conversation.

  • Going to IMS Learning Impact This Week

    Ugh. I have so much to say about the JA-SIG conference and had just dug out enough from my work backlog to think about writing a few blog posts. Now I’m going away again and will have my head crammed full of even more stuff to blog about.I’m going to try to get to at least some of the JA-SIG stuff before it fades from my memory, but in the meantime, Sakai Foundation Executive Director Michael Korcuska has a few good posts up about it on his blog.

    At any rate, if you’re going to Learning Impact, look me up. I’ll be around for the entire conference (including Thursday morning) and will be participating in the “Analytics and Learning Outcomes” panel on Tuesday at 1 PM.

  • Comment Troubles

    I’m getting occasional reports from people that they’re getting error messages when they try to submit comments hereon e-Literate. (Something about headers.) Rest assured that, despite whatever the error message is telling you, your comment is getting into my blog and trapped by my spam filter. I check that filter daily and will release your comment (assuming its appropriate) as soon as I see it.

    Sorry for the inconvenience. I may be switching to a different comment spam filter in the near future.

  • The Site is Back Up

    After two days of being down due to problems with my service provider, e-Literate is back up.

  • Going to the Sakai Amsterdam Conference

    I’ll be in Amsterdam next week for the Sakai conference. I’m not generally very good at the live blogging thing, since I like to focus on listening rather than writing. (I’m not a very good note taker for the same reason.) But I will make an effort to live-blog where I can and do after-the-fact posts where I can’t on stuff that may be of general interest.

  • Coming Soon: Guest Posts by Jim Farmer

    I’m pleased to announce that e-Literate‘s second guest blogger will be Jim Farmer. From his bio:

    Jim Farmer began his career in higher education as CIO for California State University Northridge and became the first CIO for the California State Universities. He was one of the founders of Sigma Systems Inc., a U.S. software supplier for the financial aid community. For eight years he was an associate at the Harvard’s Graduate School of Education teaching strategic planning and information systems. He was CIO at Los Rios Community College District. He was project administrator for JA-SIG’s uPortal project and then the Sakai Community Liaison. He is now affiliated with Georgetown University’s Interoperability Center and is completing a report on open source communities for Oxford University.
    He also consulted for the U.S. Department of Education during their IT Modernization project. Jim has a B.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Oklahoma , an S.M. from Harvard University in applied mathematics, and MBA from UCLA. He authored an analysis of the economics of distance learning in the Johns Hopkins University Press book “Public Funding for Higher Education: New Contexts and New Rationales.”

    And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Jim has one of the most interesting and wide-ranging intellects around. Among other things, he has contributed a revealing analysis of Blackboard’s business model and much of the raw materials and behind-the-scenes education regarding edupatents.
